The men on this team wore the uniforms of the People's Drug Stores, a Washington, D.C., retail chain, which tells us this was a company-sponsored club rather than a neighborhood nine. Employer teams like this were popular in the 1920s, when firms fielded squads to build camaraderie among workers and to promote the business in local park leagues and church and city competitions. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose negatives document the city's streets, institutions, and everyday life in the early twentieth century. Its date is given only as approximately 1921, so the record leaves the exact season open.
