This photograph records the Waseda University baseball team from Tokyo while it was in Honolulu on the way to a planned tour of the United States in 1911. Waseda, a private university founded in 1882, was among the Japanese universities that had built strong baseball programs and sent teams abroad to play American opponents, which made such trips notable for both sport and diplomacy. The picture is a Bain News Service print, from a New York agency that distributed news photographs to newspapers, so it reflects the wire-photo practice of the period. Its caption and the team's movement across the Pacific make it a useful record of early international college baseball.
