Titled "Pittsburgh layout," this glass negative of 4 by 5 inches or smaller comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across the United States in the early twentieth century to document towns, landmarks and everyday scenes for postcards and publications. The title was supplied by the company and has not been independently verified, so the exact subject of the view remains open to interpretation. In the 1920s Pittsburgh was a center of steel and manufacturing, and its rivers and crowded industrial districts drew photographers eager to show the city's scale. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in the original coatings, which is common in negatives of this age.
