Titled "La Premier Danseuse," which translates roughly to "the leading female dancer," this c1901 print presents a stage performer in the theatrical style popular at the turn of the twentieth century. The copyright line credits William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for studio portraits of actors and entertainers. The subject tags, drawn from an old caption card and not independently verified, point to ballet and burlesque, a reminder that stage pictures of this era often blurred the line between high art and popular entertainment. The costume and pose offer a useful view of how performers were presented to the public around 1901.
