Unlike most locomotive portraits of the period, this one is tied by its caption to a specific claim: that it was the first engine to run out of Chicago on the Chicago & North Western line. The record dates the engine to about 1862 and the print to about 1898, and it flags the caption data as unverified, so the claim is best read as the caption's own account. Views like this were often made as railroads looked back on their early years, when steam was still new to the city and rail lines were turning Chicago into a national hub for shipping and travel. The copyright notice credits C.D. Arnold, a Chicago photographer, which places the print in the city's commercial photography trade of the late 1890s.
