A milkman makes his rounds through Salonika with his donkeys, a sight that was routine on the city's streets in late 1918. The December photograph shows everyday commerce in a port that had hosted Allied forces since 1915 and was still recovering from a major fire in 1917 that destroyed much of its center. Held in the American National Red Cross Collection at the Library of Congress, it offers a quiet view of civilian life at the close of the First World War.
