Its French title, *Premiers au feu*, roughly means "first into the fire," which sets this 1917 color lithograph apart from the English-language recruiting posters around it. The Marine Corps was a small force before the United States entered the First World War that spring, and it expanded quickly to meet wartime demand, so posters like this one were an important tool for drawing men in. The record credits the design to Andrée Ménard and lists it as item 223 in a printed checklist of war posters, a reminder that such images were cataloged and collected as both propaganda and graphic art.
