Attenti! ...veleno!" (Beware! ...poison!) warns of danger in its own words, and the coiled snake that fills the sheet is the poster's central image. Printed in 1919, the lithograph belongs to the uneasy months after World War I, when Italy was negotiating its place in a reshaped Europe and suspicion of its former enemy, Germany, ran high. The record credits Ing. C. Olivetti as funder or sponsor, a sign of how Italian businesses of the period also used public graphics to comment on national affairs. The snake, a long-standing symbol of treachery, makes the message about diplomatic intrigue easy to read at a glance.
