Typed on the letterhead of Tarzana Ranch, this letter concerns a bookplate, the small printed label collectors pasted inside a book to show who owned it. Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the Tarzan novels, bought the land in the San Fernando Valley in 1919 and named it for his most famous character. The ranch later gave its name to the Tarzana community in Los Angeles. Letters like this one show how a writer's personal property and public image were handled in the days before mass-produced book marketing.
