Rather than a coat of arms or a crest, this bookplate shows a painter at an easel, a fitting emblem for Francis Davis Millet, the American artist whose name appears on the label. Millet worked as a painter, muralist, illustrator and war correspondent, and he was a well-known figure in American art circles in the late 1800s. Ex libris labels like this were pasted inside a book's front cover to mark it as one owner's property, and designers often used them to hint at the owner's trade or interests. Millet died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
