An ex libris bookplate, the small printed label a book owner pasted inside a volume to mark ownership, is the object here, and it belonged to Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author who created Tarzan and John Carter of Mars. Bookplates like this were a long-standing tradition among collectors, usually bearing a personal emblem, motto or design chosen by the owner. Burroughs's own plate ties him to the world of his books and to the adventure fiction that later drew filmmakers to his characters. Its placement under a movies and film heading reflects how many of his stories, from the early Tarzan pictures onward, reached audiences on the screen.
