A bookplate bearing the name of Rudolph Valentino, the silent-film star who became one of the first great heartthrobs of the American screen, gives this piece an unusual personal link to the world of reading. Ex libris plates were small printed labels pasted inside the front cover of a book to show ownership, and many collectors and celebrities used them as a quiet mark of identity. Valentino's rise in the early 1920s, especially after The Sheik in 1921, made his name instantly recognizable, so a plate carrying it is worth noticing for what it reveals about how a film idol presented himself in private life.
