Edward Penfield, best known for his poster work of the 1890s, also turned his hand to bookplates, and this one shows a cat settled among stacks of books, a playful nod to the bookish owner's domain. Penfield was a leading figure of the American poster movement, and his graphic style of flat color, bold outlines and clear lettering carried over into his smaller ex libris designs. Bookplates of this era were pasted inside a book's front cover to mark ownership, so a piece like this was both a personal emblem and a small work of commercial illustration. Look closely at how the cat and the shelves are simplified into a few confident shapes, a hallmark of the period's decorative printmaking.
