Few things in a library are as personal as the small label pasted inside a book's front cover, and this bookplate, inscribed with the name Guardabosque and associated with Washington, D.C., is a good example of the form. Such labels, called ex libris plates, announced who owned a volume and were often miniature works of design, combining a name with a motto, heraldic device, or pictorial scene. They were especially popular in the United States from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when collectors and private libraries commissioned custom designs. Worth noticing is how a sheet this small carries both an owner's identity and the taste of its era.
