The stern timbers of a wooden vessel, the heavy framework at the back of a hull, are the subject of this 1941 woodcut, which the artist signed with initials on the block and again in pencil. Woodcut was a favored medium among American printmakers of the late 1930s and 1940s, prized for bold areas of black and the visible grain of the wood, qualities that suit the weathered planks and braces of an old ship. The Library of Congress acquired the sheet through its Pennell fund, and Karen Beall's 1970 catalog of the library's American prints lists it.
