This print depicts the siege of Veracruz, the Mexican port that U.S. forces under Gen. Winfield Scott bombarded in late March 1847 during the Mexican-American War. The title gives March 25 as the date, though the shelflist card records no date and the associated attribution is unverified. The card links the print to the firm E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, a New York publisher of popular lithographs in that era. Scott's landing and the surrender of the city, which came at the end of March, were widely illustrated at the time, so such prints were often sold to a public eager for news of the war.
