Edward Williams Clay drew this 1846 lithograph, probably in late 1846 or early 1847, and H.R. Robinson's New York shop printed it. It places President James K. Polk beside generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, three figures tied to the war with Mexico, which began in spring 1846. The title's "hasty bowl of soup" seems to mock the speed and improvisation of the campaigns, a common target in the partisan cartoons of the period. Clay's work is valued today as a record of how that war was argued over in print.
