The Pause that Refreshes slogan, introduced by the Coca-Cola Company in 1929, gives this advertisement its particular hook: it asks the viewer to stop work for a moment and enjoy a bottle of Coke. The campaign ran through the Great Depression and into the postwar years, when soft drinks were becoming a daily habit for workers, shoppers and families. Coca-Cola used illustrators, magazine spreads and painted billboards to tie the drink to ordinary scenes of leisure, which is why the slogan stayed in use for decades. It is worth noticing how the ad sells a brief break rather than the drink's flavor.
