Bogotá, the high Andean capital of New Granada, is the place this print names, and that setting distinguishes it from the portraits and personalities that fill much of this board. The image dates to about 1852 and was deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office, the registration step that protected a publisher's rights to a picture. The shelflist card associates it with the firm Nagel & Weingartner, though the catalog record marks these details as unverified. Mid-century views of Spanish American cities were often based on travelers' sketches, so the print shows how American audiences imagined places far beyond their own borders.
