The Hippodrome on Sixth Avenue at 43rd Street was built as a spectacle house rather than a conventional playhouse, and this c1905 view records it in its first years. Its producers, Frederick Thompson and Elmer Dundy, designed the stage for enormous productions, including a tank that could be flooded for water scenes and a seating area that held several thousand people. The photograph was copyrighted by C.C. Langill of New York, though the date and attribution come from an unverified caption card. The building shows how entertainment in the city was moving toward mass audiences in the early twentieth century.
