This picture shows a YMCA canteen set up in a cellar in Flanders, the low-lying region of western Belgium and northern France where much of the fighting took place in 1915. The Young Men's Christian Association ran canteens and recreation rooms for soldiers near the front, offering hot drinks, simple food, writing paper and reading material. Cellars in the shattered towns of the area often gave the best protection from shellfire, so these rooms could be both a refuge and a place to rest. The scene is worth noting for how it shows soldiers seeking ordinary comforts in a landscape of constant danger.
