A color lithograph from about 1918, this British poster by Edgar Wright promotes the Young Men's Christian Association, whose wartime work with soldiers set it apart from the military recruiting posters of the same years. During the First World War the YMCA ran huts, canteens, and writing rooms near training camps, behind the lines, and at the front, offering tea, stationery, reading material, and entertainment to men far from home. Posters like this one helped raise funds and recruit volunteers for that work, and they reflect how the war had made the organization's welfare role a visible part of civilian life in Britain.
