This color lithograph presents Queen Victoria as a mother, with the emphasis on family rather than royal ceremony. It reproduces a painting by Robert Thorburn, an Associate of the Royal Academy known chiefly for his miniatures, and the print was issued in the 1890s by the Paris and London publishing firm Boussod, Valadon & Co. By then Victoria had reigned for more than 50 years, so a domestic image like this one served a public that wanted to see the monarch at home with her children. Commercial reproductions of this kind helped spread the queen's image of family life across Britain, Europe, and North America.
