Advertising salad oil in five varieties, this Munich poster carries the name Atlas-Salatoele and the firm Franz Kathreiners Nachfolger, a company better known for its roasted malt coffee substitute. The design is by Ludwig Hohlwein, one of the most prominent German poster artists of the early twentieth century, whose bold flat shapes and simplified figures helped turn commercial posters into a serious art form. Printed around 1910 by the Vereinigte Druckereien und Kunstanstalten in Munich, it shows how color lithography was used to sell everyday food products to a wide public.
