A boy in a dark coat stands on Pitt Street, one of the crowded blocks on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where tenements pressed close together and children made the sidewalks their playground. The picture dates to 1938, but the print was made around 1994 or 1995, as archivists often do when they print from older negatives. Gold toning gives the silver image warmer tones and helps it last longer. Pitt Street's residents in the late 1930s were largely immigrant families, so the scene offers a glimpse of everyday neighborhood life in that period.
