The title points to John Greenleaf Whittier's poem about a country boy who goes shoeless and free of schoolroom cares, a theme that appealed to Americans who felt that rural childhood was slipping away. Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York in 1872, when the firm was producing large numbers of sentimental scenes of family and country life for a middle-class market that hung such images in parlors and kitchens. Prints like this were inexpensive, which helps explain why many survive. The Gale Research catalog raisonné of 1983 lists it, giving researchers a fixed reference for tracing the firm's output.
