The title "The tally-ho" points to a particular subject: a tally-ho was a light, horse-drawn coach, the kind driven by sporting gentlemen in the late 1800s, so the picture may pair young sitters with a bit of fashionable leisure. The print is a boudoir card, a small studio portrait on a stiff card mount that was widely sold in the 1890s. It was copyrighted by W.T. Barnum of Adrian, Michigan, around 1891, and the Library of Congress later included it in the 1997 book *Eyes of the Nation*. Its children's subject places it within the period's growing market for affordable portraits of family life.
