A volleyball game in progress at the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California, photographed by Ansel Adams in 1943, shows recreation going on inside a camp that held Japanese Americans after Executive Order 9066 in 1942 required their removal from the West Coast. Adams, long known for his Sierra landscapes, made a series of pictures at Manzanar that year, and his images of everyday camp life stand in quiet contrast to the fences and barracks that defined the site. The caption, transcribed from Adams's own note on the back of the print, names both the sport and the camp, and the negative is one of the Manzanar photographs held by the Library of Congress.
