Unlike the portrait caricatures that usually fill a book like this, this cover shows puppets, the wooden performers of the marionette and puppet stage, and it signals the book's theme before a reader opens it. *Stage Folk* was published in New York by Lieber & Lewis around 1922 and collects caricatures by Frueh, whose sharp, exaggerated drawings of theater people were popular in the years after World War I. The image is a linocut, a block-printing method that leaves bold, simplified lines, and the cover shows how well that technique suits the stylized, slightly mocking character of the book's subject.
