Australia's Imperishable Record" leads with a quotation from Sir Ian Hamilton, the British general who commanded the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli in 1915. Its closing call, "Australians! The empire needs you," was aimed at men of military age during the early months of the First World War, when Australia relied on volunteers to fill its expanding force. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps had landed on the Gallipoli peninsula that April, and their conduct there was widely reported at home and used to encourage enlistment. The lithograph is a useful record of how commanders' praise was turned into recruiting material.
