The record for this picture gives only a catalog number, so its exact route isn't known from the entry itself. It belongs to a group of images of Yosemite's roads, the wagon and stage routes that carried visitors into the valley before automobiles arrived. The area became a state grant in 1864 and a national park in 1890, and photographers often recorded these roads to show how travelers reached such a remote place. Look at the road surface, the grades, and how the route bends with the terrain to see the difficulties early builders faced.
