President Theodore Roosevelt is the subject of this stereograph, which shows him on Glacier Point, the granite overlook rising more than 3,000 feet above Yosemite Valley. In May 1903 he toured the park with naturalist John Muir, and the trip drew wide public attention to Yosemite's protection. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that mass-produced stereo cards, issued views like this one to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two side-by-side photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. The caption presents the outing as the president's recreation amid the park's rugged grandeur, a reminder of how closely Americans followed his travels.
