Few sporting prints from the 1870s claim a national title as boldly as this one, which proclaims Chicago's team as the country's champions. The lithograph was printed by J.S. Thompson & Co. at the Times Building on Fifth Avenue in Chicago, and its date is estimated at 1876. That year the Chicago White Stockings won the first National League pennant, when the club was run by pitcher and part-owner Albert Spalding and included Adrian "Cap" Anson, the team's leading hitter. Posters like this one were meant to be hung in saloons, shop windows, and sporting goods stores, so they show how eagerly a growing city tied its civic pride to its ball club.
