Few posters from the 1880s pair a team's championship with such an ornate title as "The Monarchs of the Sphere." This lithograph, designed by T.J. Nicholl and signed on the stone, celebrates the 1886 St. Louis Browns, who won the American Association pennant that year and then took the postseason series against the Chicago White Stockings. The print's date of about November 11, 1886, and its copyright entry suggest it was issued soon after the season ended, when clubs and printers were eager to sell souvenirs of a title. Its large format and bold lettering reflect how commercial lithography was used to publicize baseball in that era.
