The Famous World Beaters were a touring team of the 1880s and 1890s that played exhibition baseball across the country, and this photograph shows the St. Louis Browns squad posed in their uniforms. The Browns were one of the strongest clubs of the American Association in its early years, winning the league pennant four straight seasons from 1885 to 1888. Team portraits like this one were often made for promotion and to sell tickets, so the stiff, formal poses tell you as much about how clubs wanted to present themselves as they do about the players.
