The St. Louis Browns were one of the city's two major league clubs in 1909, playing at Sportsman's Park on the city's north side, and a team panorama from that season captures the whole roster lined up together, a format that was popular with early twentieth-century ball clubs. Panoramas like this one were often sold to fans or displayed in clubhouses, so they preserve the players, uniforms, and staging of the period in a way single portraits rarely do. The Browns were then in the American League, where they had struggled for years before the Cardinals' presence in the city kept baseball rivalry lively. Looking closely at the faces and caps, you can see how formal team photography had become by the turn of the century.
