The St. Louis Cardinals of 1909 were a club still finding their footing. The franchise, then known as the Perfectos before taking the Cardinals name in 1900, had spent much of the early 1900s in the National League's lower reaches, and a team photograph from this season captures a roster that would soon be remembered as part of a long tradition in Missouri baseball. Panoramic team portraits like this one were a popular format of the era, lining players up across a wide frame so that every uniform and face could be seen in a single view.
