This photographic print records a display of Custer's Last Fight, presented by the Boston Cyclorama Company and dated May 27, 1889 on its caption card, though the catalog notes that this data is unverified. Cyclorama shows of this kind used enormous painted canvases, often arranged around a viewing platform, to give audiences the sense of standing inside a battle. The fight they depicted was the June 1876 engagement at the Little Bighorn in Montana Territory, in which George Armstrong Custer and much of his 7th Cavalry were killed. Images of that battle remained popular with the public for decades afterward, and surviving photographs of such displays help show how the event was retold to paying audiences.
