This Montreal recruiting poster takes an unusual approach: it addresses Jewish men directly and invokes three prominent British Jewish public figures, Herbert Samuel, Rufus Isaacs, and Edwin Montagu, to make its case. Printed by a Montreal lithography firm sometime between 1914 and 1918, it belongs to Canada's wartime effort to fill infantry ranks through voluntary enlistment. Its slogan, that Jews "the world over love liberty" and will fight for it, reflects an appeal to shared stakes in the war and to a community that was not always welcomed into Canadian military service. The poster is a useful window into how recruiters tried to reach specific communities during the First World War.
