This 1888 sheet is unusual on a board of single-state maps because it pairs Alabama with Florida, two neighbors whose shared border and Gulf coastline made them natural to show together. In the late 1880s, railroads were opening both states' interiors, carrying cotton, timber and lumber to market and bringing travelers to Gulf and Atlantic resorts. Maps like this served travelers, land agents and businessmen tracking new lines and towns, so the placement of cities and routes is often the most telling detail. Note how the two states share a single sheet, a reminder of how closely their transportation networks were tied at the time.
