In 1887, Winchester, New Hampshire, was a small mill town in the Ashuelot River valley of Cheshire County, a few miles south of Keene. Its economy rested on water-powered mills along the river and on farming in the surrounding hills, and the rail line running through the valley linked its goods and workers to larger markets to the east and west. Like many rural New England towns of the period, Winchester was losing some of its young people to cities and to the western states, even as its mills and churches remained the center of local life. Town meetings, church congregations, and the grange halls shaped civic and social routines, and residents would have recognized the village by its mill buildings, its white church spires, and the streets climbing the surrounding slopes.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Winchester, New Hampshire, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
