Antrim, New Hampshire, in 1887 was a small farming and mill town in Hillsborough County, with water power from the Contoocook River and its branches driving sawmills, gristmills, and other mills along the valleys. The town had been incorporated in 1777 and took its name from County Antrim in Ireland, a connection that older residents would have known. By the late nineteenth century, many families who had worked hill farms were turning to wage work in the valley mills, and people were settling closer to the villages with road and rail access. Churches, the town hall, and village stores anchored civic and social life. The town's streets and buildings in this view reflect a community still organized around its river.
