Penacook, New Hampshire, in 1887 was a mill village on the Contoocook River, a few miles north of Concord, the state capital. Its economy rested on water power from the river falls, which drove paper and textile works and gave the village its working character. Residents knew Penacook as a place where mill whistles set the daily schedule and where families depended on the wages of the factories along the banks. The 1887 map records those mills, the dwellings clustered near them, and the streets and churches that served a community tied closely to the river's power and the economy of the Merrimack Valley.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Penacook, New Hampshire, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
