Newfields, New Hampshire, in 1884 was a small farming town in Rockingham County, lying along the Squamscott River between Exeter and Newmarket. Most residents earned their living from dairy and general farming, with some work in the mills and shoe shops of the river villages nearby. The Boston and Maine Railroad's lines through the region carried goods and passengers to Boston and the seacoast, linking local farms and workshops to wider markets. Civic life centered on the town meeting, the churches, and the schools that served outlying districts. The bird's-eye view shows the town as its residents would have recognized it, with its farms, roads, and river crossings laid out in the years before the mill towns of the Merrimack and Salmon Falls valleys drew much of the region's growth.
