In 1884 Rochester was a town of farms, village centers, and factory districts in Strafford County, New Hampshire, and this view records its streets at a time when horse-drawn wagons and foot traffic moved between homes, shops, and church steeples. Local life centered on churches, lodges, and the schoolhouses along the outlying roads. That autumn, residents followed the presidential contest between Grover Cleveland and James G. Blaine with the same interest as their neighbors across New England. Those who walked these streets would have known Rochester as a close-knit community where the seasons and the working day set the pace of life.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Rochester, New Hampshire, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
