Rochester, New Hampshire, in 1877 was a mill and shoe-manufacturing town in Strafford County, where the Cocheco River supplied water power to factories along its banks. The railroad, which had reached the town by the 1840s, carried goods and workers between the local shops and larger markets to the south and north. Shoemaking and textile work drew families from farms in the surrounding hills into the village, and the growing population filled the streets and boarding houses near the mills. Residents who looked at this map would have recognized it as a record of their own neighborhoods, churches, schools, and factory yards at a time when the town's economy depended on those industries.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Rochester, New Hampshire, drawn in 1877. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
