Claremont, New Hampshire, in 1877 was a mill town built along the Sugar River, where waterpower drove woolen and cotton works and a growing number of machine shops. Its factories drew workers from the surrounding farm towns and from Canada, and the rail line through the valley linked local goods to markets in Boston and beyond. The Sullivan Machine Company, a maker of mining and rock-drilling equipment, was among the firms whose products carried the town's name well past the Connecticut Valley. Civic life centered on the mill district, its churches, and the village streets above the river, where residents measured the town by its payrolls and by the steady hum of its water-powered shops.
