Franklin, New Hampshire, sits where the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers meet to form the Merrimack, and in 1884 that water power still drove the town's economy. Its mills, which made woolens, hosiery, and other textiles, employed much of the local workforce, and the Northern Railroad line along the river gave their products a route to Boston and the wider market. Franklin was still a town governed by annual meetings and selectmen, and it would not receive a city charter until 1895. Residents of the day knew the place as a mill town in the Merrimack valley, shaped by its falls, its factory bells, and the trains that passed through the village center.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Franklin, New Hampshire, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
