Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1884 was a mill town and academy town on the Squamscott River, a short distance inland from the Piscataqua and the Atlantic coast. Its textile mills along the river drew workers and kept the local economy tied to manufacturing, while the Boston and Maine Railroad carried goods and passengers to larger markets. Phillips Exeter Academy, founded in 1781, gave the town a national reputation for schooling and drew students from well beyond New England. Residents also took pride in Exeter's older role as a county seat and as a meeting place for New Hampshire's revolutionary-era governing bodies, a past that shaped local civic life in the late nineteenth century.
