Whitefield, New Hampshire, in Coos County, was a small farming and lumbering town in 1883, set among the hills north of the White Mountains. Its families depended on dairy herds, hay, orchards, and timber cut from the surrounding woodlots, with sawmills working the streams that run through the town. Visitors heading to the mountain hotels and summer boarding houses passed through the region by rail, and the nearby line serving Littleton brought lumber and passengers into the north country. Town meetings, churches, schools, and the grange halls shaped civic life, and most residents would have known Whitefield as a quiet agricultural community whose fortunes rose and fell with the seasons and the price of wood.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Whitefield, New Hampshire, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
